Mourne Mountain Banded Stone
Collected as small cobbles from streams in the Mourne Mountains, Co. Down. Mourne Mountain Banded Stone is formed from the remains of worn down volcanic islands which were deposited some 430 million years ago. When the Mourne Mountain granites were intruded as molten rock into these older rocks some 56 million years ago, the great heat from the granites hardened the older rocks, producing an interesting banded stone that is excellent for jewellery. The stones are cut and hand polished to reveal their natural beauty and then used to create this very unique range of jewellery.
